Art

Art and Design forms one element of the creative development curriculum. It is an integral part of the school ethos and this is evident throughout the school environment. Art and Design is promoted as a means of positive attitudes towards good mental health and well-being.

Skills are developed progressively through the use of a skills ladder. Art is included on mid and long term plans in each year group. Assessment of activities is recorded in non-core evidence books by each year group. Many of the art projects undertaken in each year group have a cross curricular focus for example PSHE, RE and History. Every year group studies a famous artist. Every year group has PPA sessions with the Art Specialist.

Whole school inter-house art competitions are held across school. A theme is chosen, parental involvement is encouraged and the work is displayed around school. Examples include portraits of the Queen, fruit and vegetable sculptures and recycled fashion. A gallery is put up around school at the end of each school year to celebrate the talents of all children in school. Parents are invited to come and see the range of work on display. Trips to art galleries, installations and museums including Salt’s Mill, Yorkshire Sculpture Park, Bankfield Museum, Anthony Gormley’s Another Place and The Angel of the North.

Art work is shared and celebrated on the school website as part of class Twitter pages and parents and members of the school community are encouraged to comment.
